Family of brain-damaged woman denied custody
Topics: The Truth About PVS
This article reports that the husband of Samira Salmassi choked her, which caused his wife to be in a "persistant vegetative state." Samira's brother wants to take care of her, but a judge ruled that the brother couldn't take care of his sister.
Family members of Samira Salmassi lost a custody battle today in Howard County Circuit Court over the Ellicott City woman, who has been in a vegetative state since her ex-husband choked her last year.
Judge Dennis M. Sweeney ruled that members of the family, who live in Ohio, were too far away to be responsible for the immediate decisions that might be needed for Salmassi's care at a Baltimore rehabilitation hospital. Salmassi will remain in the custody of state Department of Social Services.
Another report details the woman's plight.
A little more than a year ago, Ghafour Asemani, the ex-husband, walked into the small lobby at Howard County police headquarters and told the officer sitting behind the glass window that he had killed his wife.
Asemani had taped his ex-wife's telephone conversations with other men the night before and, after failing to calm his rage, choked her as she finished her morning shower. Police found the bathroom door locked, the shower curtain closed, the lights on and the exhaust fan humming.

I notice that the second link calls her "brain-dead." This is obviously false, as there is no mention of her being on a respirator and there is indication that she responds to voices. But the media never bothers to use these terms carefully.
