Why was Terri Schiavo Never Allowed Tests?

Topics: The Truth About PVS

Pamela Hennessy writes a stirring commentary, "Goodbye, Beloved" about the recent development which shows that PVS patients are aware, as Terri Schiavo was. But Terri's parents were labeled "religious fanatics" and "delusional" because they tried to tell the courts and the media that Terri was very aware of her surroundings and lovinging interacted with her family.

"After years of trying to block the murder of her own child, she [Terri's mother] had to witness the grisly death of her daughter over the course of nearly two weeks. Mary's daughter, Terri Schiavo, was dehydrated to death because of two reasons: she was classified by the circuit courts as a person in a persistent vegetative state and her husband (who was her guardian) was the person largely in control of her destiny. He wanted it done and, by God, it was."
"Now, BBC is reporting of an extraordinary development in assessing the clinical diagnosis of persistent vegetative state. IIf correct, the findings alone are reason enough to call a halt to terminal dehydration of brain injured patients. Additionally, they challenge the PVS diagnosis in such a way that the determination should probably be stricken from medical annals entirely."

Wesley Smith comments in "Terri Schiavo and the Unconscious Interactive Patient":

...the bottom line is that while Terri was lying in the bed waiting for the appeals courts to deliver her death warrant, it would have done no harm to give her a PET scan to see what could be seen. Nor would it have harmed anyone for Judge Greer to have permitted very respected rehabilitation therapists, who believed they could have helped Terri relearn how to swallow on her own, to give it a try. Judge Greer's adamant refusal to permit a PET scan and therapy is inexplicable--if,that is, he wanted the fullest record possible before the helpless woman he was duty-bound to protect was dehydrated to death.

I still feel bad about Terri's death really. She was just too young to leave us all.
