Family Fights for Son's Life

A battle for the life of a fourteen year-old boy:

The family of a 14-year-old who was shot in the neck has received a restraining order preventing the University of Kansas Hospital from taking the boy off of life support.

Michael Todd of Kansas City was shot Tuesday at a Blue Springs apartment. Police said a witness told them that the gun might have gone off accidentally.

"Our doctors have determined him to be brain dead," hospital spokesman Dennis McCulloch said on Friday.

But Michael's family argues that the hospital wants to remove the boy from life support because it wants to use his organs for a donor program.

"It's so quick," said Odette Cole, Todd's aunt. "He's 14 years old. ... You're acting like you're in a grocery store for body parts."

I've received information from a third party suggesting that Michael's mother feels that he is showing signs of increased brain activity. The situation is desperate and one for prayer. I'll keep you informed as more information is provided.

Thanks so much for reporting this sad story. I am sure that KU Medical Center does not want this out in the open. It was heart breaking to see Michael's mom standing outside of the hospital alone and trying to get someone to listen to her.
Thankfully, a judge saw her handwritten note and ordered the temporary restraining order. I saw no mention of this most important story in the Kansas City Star this morning. Please keep us updated. I fear that there is not a compassionate doctor at Children's Mercy Hospital who is willing to help Michael and his family.

Here is the latest on Michael Todd from the KMBZ website.
They report that Micheal has been moved to Children's Mercy Hospital.
Hopefully, they will have more mercy than KU Medical Center.

Sorry for the news from KMBZ but it was incorrect. Mike has not been moved to Children's Mercy Hospital. He remains at KU Medical Center. The temporary restraining order called for him to be transferred but they have not found an accepting MD at Childrens. The KU Medical Center will answer the order on Monday. They say that Mike is "brain dead".
Please pray that there is one doctor at Children's Mercy who has mercy on Mike and his family.
