« David Gibbs Law Firm To Advise McLeod-Mullinax Family: Alabama Advocacy Center Joins Fray | Main | Magouirk family to ask for visitation rights » April 12, 2005Schiavo's 'Dr. Humane Death' Got 1980 Diagnosis WrongTopics: NewsIt turns out that the Doctor that Judge George Greer depended on as the expert to diagnose Terri Schiavo as being in a persistent vegetative state and who was 105% sure about his diagnosis - had been wrong before. (CNSNews.com) -- A neurologist hired by Michael Schiavo to confirm that his wife Terri was in a persistent vegetative state said he was "105 percent sure" of that diagnosis, but Dr. Ronald Cranford expressed similar certainty about a patient he examined in 1980 who later regained both consciousness and the ability to communicate. Three days before Terri Schiavo's death, Cranford appeared on the MSNBC talk program, "Scarborough Country," to discuss her condition. Cranford was interviewed by reporter Lisa Daniels. DANIELS: Are you 100 percent correct in your opinion that Terri Schiavo is in a persistent vegetative state? Do you agree with that? CRANFORD: I am 105 percent sure she is in a vegetative state. And the autopsy will show severe irreversible brain damage to the higher centers, yes. (...) Cranford expressed similar certainty about another patient he declared to be in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) in 1980, former Minneapolis Police Sgt. David Mack. (...) 18 months after Cranford declared Mack's case hopeless, doctors at the advanced care facility where Mack was being treated noticed that he was awake. So much for Dr Robert (Humane Death) Cranford's expertise! Posted by richard at April 12, 2005 2:31 PM Articles Related to News:

I think that Dr. Cranford should undergo a peer review and get kicked out of the medical field. He is obviously incompetent with his diagnosis. Posted by: Maggie4life at April 12, 2005 5:47 PM Hmmm. What this shows is that PVS is very very difficult to diagnose correctly and that nobody can be "105%" sure. Which I think condemns Dr. Cranford more than anything else. Anyone who states that they're "105%" certain about anything in medicine is most definitely talking out of his ass. Posted by: ed at April 12, 2005 6:31 PM Exactly, Ed. Posted by: oldfitz at April 13, 2005 3:40 PM Thanks for posting this . . . I added the information to my Terri Schiavo summary post along with the information showing that Dr. Cranford didn't even follow his own published policies in diagnosing PVS in Terri Schiavo's case. http://www.xanga.com/item.aspx?user=purple_kangaroo_Angela&tab=weblogs&uid=237598982 Posted by: purple_kangaroo_Angela at April 13, 2005 7:08 PM |

Thank you for giving us this information Richard. There's a verse that says "don't participate in their evil deeds, but rather expose them". We need to continue to expose exactly what has been wrong with each person who contributed to the killing of Terri. And who would lead others to more such killings. I support you with my whole heart, Richard, and appreciate the stand that you are taking to help those who are vulnerable and threatened by what the late pope called our culture 'of death'. God bless you, Richard.
