UPDATE on Urgent Action

Topics:

I just got a live person (or an extraordinary 'bot!) at Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz's DC number, 202-225-7931. The other mailboxes seem to be full, or maybe that's the default message when a staffer isn't available. In any case, call, (be polite!) and express your support for Terri.

See URGENT ACTION post below for more information.

FWIW, I got through to Jim Davis's office as well.

What if embryonic stem cells could cure Terri fully? Should that option be explored here?

Posted by: Jesse at March 20, 2005 6:58 PM

Jesse, ya gotta fight one battle at a time! :-) *First* we save Terri's life, *then* we touch off a bunch of blog-quarrels over stem-cell research. 'Kay? ;-)

Posted by: Mary in LA at March 20, 2005 7:04 PM

I see from Rep. Wexler's Web site that Reps. Wexler and Wasserman-Schultz are scheduled to meet with the President of Poland from March 21 - 24.

Does anyone in FL know if this means that they will miss the vote tonight?

Posted by: Mary in LA at March 20, 2005 7:06 PM

Jesse, of course not. We cannot destroy life to save another. However, some have said that with proper therapy by specialists, she could improve. Furthermore, there is always the possibility that TERRI'S OWN stem cells may be able to be used to help her. ADULT stem cells are perfectly moral to be used. When used on the same person, there is NO rejection issue as there would be with embryonic stem cells.

is congress voting to forceably stick feeding tubes into us without our permission?

Posted by: Stan at March 20, 2005 7:09 PM

Oh, dear, cw, I was really hoping no one would bite on the off-topic...

A comment like Jesse's is called an attempted "thread hijacking", or "thread-jacking" for short. I didn't want Terri's deadline to get forgotten in the electronic firefight that would inevitably break out. Okay? ;-)

Posted by: Mary in LA at March 20, 2005 7:10 PM

I got a live person also...I explained that at times during this case I had thought maybe we should let Terri go but as I have read more about it and look in to it more I have come to realize that Terri is as much alive and human as I am today and if we continue to keep the feeding tube out it will be murder of an innocent woman..I also said we should always error on the side of life and that Terri deserves to have a chance at rehabilitation...

Posted by: annmarie at March 20, 2005 7:11 PM

Stan, all you have to do is write yourself a living will saying "No feeding tubes", and you're covered. Be a man, stand up for yourself, and make your wishes known in writing! That's all it takes.

Posted by: Mary in LA at March 20, 2005 7:12 PM

Just called Debbie (or her staff that is). She does not support congressional efforts to save Terri (gave some mumbo jumbo). I think I will continue to call our congressman (and women) but I am pretty much assuming that liberals once agains will rationalize ("rational lies") away the need for Federal Government intervention. That may cost them in 2006.

Never give up!

Posted by: Hidden Nook at March 20, 2005 7:12 PM

MAJOR QUESTION HERE....
What happened to the Federal Marshalls arresting anyone who puts a Federal Witness' life in harm's way?
What happened to taking Terri into protective custody to keep her from harm's way?

Does our Congress have any backbone at all???

(I am soo hungry...)

Posted by: JoMarley at March 20, 2005 7:13 PM

Sorry, Stan, I assumed your question was sarcastic. If your question is serious, then the answer is no, that's not what Congress is voting on. I think the full text of the bill is at http://www.terrisfight.org,

Posted by: Mary in LA at March 20, 2005 7:14 PM

Oh
PS I too got a live person in Davis' office , sounded like alot of chatter in the background...lots of callers.

Posted by: JoMarley at March 20, 2005 7:16 PM

Has anyone counted the votes? Are there too many "undecideds" to do that?

Posted by: Teri J at March 20, 2005 7:25 PM

JoMarley - as I understand it, Congress didn't issue a subpeona in the legal sense, but rather some sort of letter asking her to appear. I could be wrong on that, if I am please someone correct me.

And take a look here...
http://terrideservesjustice.blogspot.com/

There is alot that local law enforcement can do that hasn't been done.

Posted by: Teri J at March 20, 2005 7:29 PM

I called Rep. Wasserman-Schultz's office again to exhort her to support the legislation, unless she wants to appear to be indifferent to the rights of disabled people. I doubt it will change her mind, though. Seems like she's bound and determined to avoid any bipartisanship. :-/

Apparently she has canceled or postponed her trip to Poland, as her assistant said she will attend the vote. Rats. :-(

Posted by: Mary in LA at March 20, 2005 7:34 PM

I also called both offices, this afternoon just before 5 pm, and spoke directly with aides. I was surprised to get through. More of us need to be frying those phones! Please call, y'all!

Posted by: Ruth at March 20, 2005 8:08 PM

I called Terri's congressmen and woman and we need to keep calling and calling. The good Lord is very interested in how we stand up right now for the least of his children. We must pray and pray and then pray some more. Don't you feel the battle of principalites here. I close my eyes and see Terri's face. We all love her. Our sister in Christ. Don't weary my friends. Lets do what we need to in action and prayer to help be part of the remnant who understand how crucial this case is for all our own safety.

Posted by: Lorraine at March 20, 2005 8:17 PM

I just got through to Congressman Davis and Congresswoman Shultz and had others phone. I felt a little intimidated calling but for you other chickens out there, it was a piece of cake, so pick up the phone and call. No excuses, Terri can't speak for herself. And lets keep praying all night, thats probably are most powerful weapon.

Stop attacking the poor man! This is his decision and none of your business. Medical decisions are made each day that are difficult and may seem inhumane to some of you but that is life. I think what you are forgetting is e just has to make these tough decisions and live with them. Just beacause you don't agree does not make hime a monster. LEt her go, she is already living a worse life then death could ever bring her. And this is gods will.....................

Posted by: Caitlyn at March 20, 2005 9:41 PM

Us not agreeing with Michael isn't what calls his motives into question, it's his own actions.

Posted by: powersthatblog at March 20, 2005 9:51 PM

"Poor man," my aching middle-aged posterior! I think he's a perjurer and very probably an abuser.

There's waaaay too much about this case that's fishy. It needs to be investigated. The diagnostics done on Terri were not adequate to assess her condition. This is a matter of public record. If Terri is allowed to die, by Michael's order, she is to be immediately cremated (which is contrary to Catholic doctrine, I believe) with NO autopsy. Doesn't that sound like he's trying to hide something?

Posted by: Mary in LA at March 20, 2005 9:51 PM

I'm watching the debates for Terri right now...
doesn't look good. Debbie shultz just spoke to have them stay away from the case of Terri.

Posted by: A friend at March 20, 2005 10:03 PM

Hi Mary, while I did not want to start a firefight, I did also want to post a totally pro-life view on the issue.

In any event, more to the topic, I had some hope when I saw how the Senate vote went. It's truly sad that the Democrats speaking are mostly against keeping Terri alive. I hope they continue to lose seats in the House in 2006. For those who spoke out against life for Terri, I hope this is remembered in 2006. Hopefully, these people will lose to pro-life opponents.

Posted by: cw at March 20, 2005 10:14 PM

CW, I understand and sympathize! I just didn't want the trolls to seize the opportunity to muddy up the thread. You know how it goes... ;-)

Are you tuned in to Drudge Radio? He's talking about Terri's case now!!! Drudge is saying "Ya gotta keep her alive, because now it's a hot potato for the Democrats..."

Posted by: Mary in LA at March 20, 2005 10:23 PM

It amazes me that you people are so blinded by you the media. You relay on information from one side so that you can make your opinion the right one. Don't you realize hundreds of people make the decision to take thier loved ones off of life support or NOt to put the feeding tube in someone who will live their life in a vegatative state! So I guess ALL of these peolple are murders, abusers and have alterior motives! Shame, shame, shame on you. IT is not your place to judge, do any of you remeber that from your catholic clases?? Let Terri die, god was ready, but man intervened.

Posted by: SUSAN at March 20, 2005 11:24 PM

Bill has passed, Bush is signing... THank the Lord there is Justice!

Posted by: Justice at March 21, 2005 12:48 AM

Susan,

She is not dying, and is only disabled. She doesn't deserve to die that way. It's cruel and inhumane. Those who say it's peaceful and painless are lying through their teeth.

TERRI HASNT DIED , SHES JUST BEING STARVED TO DEATH BY THE REQUEST OF HER SO CALLED HUSBAND.
