« Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite Swallows the MSM Distortions 'Hook, Line, and Sinker' | Main | Why the Rush to Kill Terri Schindler-Schiavo? » March 16, 2005Starving for a Fair DiagnosisTopics: Medical IssuesAnd, quite apart from the question of Terri’s therapy and care, it is entirely likely that Terri has never been properly diagnosed. Terri is usually described as being in a Persistent Vegetative State (PVS), and indeed Judge Greer ruled as a finding of fact that she is PVS; but this diagnosis and finding were arrived at in a way that has many neurologists expressing surprise and dismay. - Fr. Rob Johansen By Father Rob Johansen writing in The National Review - Terri Schiavo is not out of medical options. But that’s the “fact” her husband wants you to believe. Terri Schiavo lies in a Florida hospice, subject to a judge’s order that will cause her to die of starvation and dehydration commencing this Friday, March 18, at 1:00 P.M. Her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, have fought for over a decade to prevent her death. They have repeatedly gone to court in their efforts to stop Terri’s husband, Michael, from removing the tube that provides her with food and water. As the sole caregiver over 15 yrs. for my husband who is severely brain damaged i have been devastated & horrified at so many bluring of the issues that are going on in Florida about Terri , since we just moved here. I certainly would love to stand face to face with Michael & show him what love is really about!
That being said , I want to refer to an article about PVS not being a diagnosis in Headlines magazine July/Aug '92 under the heading "Working Definitions in Early Coma Recovery"
"Although we frequently think of and refer to coma as a prolonged period of unconsciousness, the term is more accurately applied to a person in this state for no longer than 3 to 4 weeks. A peson in a coma has no sleep/ wake cycles, and eyes remain closed. When the sleep/wake cycles return and blood pressure, respiration, and digestion normalize, the patient is considered to be in what some refer to as a vegative state. In this stage, although eye opening may occur, true visual tracking or sustain fixation is not present. Many experts suggest that a patient be classified as being in a persistent vegatative state (PVS) if he or she continues to remain in a vegetative state at least 1 yr after a traumatic brain injury. Therefore, PVS indicates a prognnosis rather than a diagnosis (NeuroRehabilitation 1991;1,3:33-40). ...... "
The habit of saying that PVS is a diagnosis is wrong. PVS IS A PROGNOSIS and for someone to have the ability to place Terri in a hospice (not terminally ill) with no aid to recover is neglegent and criminal. And by not providing a chance to recover to have the ability to cause her death is beyond any reasonable comprehension and belief !
