Does Michael Know What Terri Wanted?

Michael Schiavo has publicly stated that his goal in withholding treatment from his wife and removing her feeding tube (leading to death-by-starvation) is in accord with her wishes. During his recent appearance on the Larry King Show he gave a different story:

From the Larry King show (March 18, 2005) HT: NickQueen

M. SCHIAVO: Yes, I do. But this is not about them, it's about Terri. And I've also said that in court. We didn't know what Terri wanted, but this is what we want...

Also, see the Empire Journal [A review of the transcript of Friday night’s Larry King show when Schiavo and his attorney, George Felos were guests, clearly indicates that Michael Schiavo admitted that he did not know what the wishes of Terri Schindler-Schiavo are in regard to being kept alive by assisted feeding] and We Didn't Know What Terri Wanted.

So now we have the fourth contradictory statement from Michael Schiavo, and it is most likely to be the most truthful of the lot. He does not know what she wants, it is what we want. He said it live on Larry King. The man is a pathological liar. I wonder if this can be seen as consistent with a man who is a wife abuser?

I am so thankful This law has passed the Senate!!
Michael Schiavo is not a credible witness as to what Terri wanted! He has totally abused his power of guardianship... He has his COMMON LAW FAMILY to go home to. HOW DARE HE DENY HER PARENTS AND FAMILY TO ENTER THE HOSPICE?
He should be headed to jail for abusing Terri's 1.7million dollar settlement. I have signed a petition online to have Judge Greer removed from his seat on the bench. He has totally diregarded all of Terri's rights. He has overlooked the things a guardian must do in order to remain guardian! Together Judge Greer and Michael Schiavo
have violated every right Terri has.

I sent the links to the CNN story about Michael to Fox News and Sean Hannity!

So is anything going to be done in light of his admitted lies and the sworn testimonies of one of his adulterous flings?

Posted by: Amy at March 20, 2005 07:24 PM

probably not, but it might be proof that he committed perjury? (Is that lying under oath?)

Have you noticed that Michael never speaks to anyone unless Felos is by his side. Why is that I wonder?

Terri's not brain-dead.

And we should value the disabled a lot more than we have.

It's only a matter of time before the whole truth about the Schiavo story is known.

Michael can't hide it forever.

Theses decisions are made by families everyday in our county. This is a private decisin made by the husband. It should not be anyones choice but his!!! God already made the choice for Terri, if it wasn't for the selfish human intrvention she would be dead. Terri is being made a policital pawn by the Republicans. If this were a inner city black or hispanc person it wouldn't be a debate. THis is typical religous rite conservative stance,"if you don't agree with us,then we will carry on and shove it down your throats". Let Terri go and stop being selfish, it is gods will

Sounds like it's taken out of context.

Since Micheal doesn't know if Terry want to live or not, it means Terry's parents don't know if Terry wants to live or not. Hasn't it occur to people that this goes both ways?

Shesh, I guess everyone is wellingly intrepet to what they want to hear/see.

By the way, this article made it sound like it's Micheal's decision alone that Terry shouldn't live.

I'll bet people didn't know that the decision was made by the court after hearing from numerous witnesses from both side.

Nope, everyone just blindly believe they know what's the best for a complete strange to them.

Would you selfish people educate yourself.

Myth - Michael Schiavo made the decision for Terri that she would want to die and Michael could at any time hand that power over to her parents. This is false! The trial court became the surrogate decision-maker in this case.

Question - Why did Terri’s husband get to make the decision about whether she should live or die?

Michael Schiavo did not make the decision to discontinue life-prolonging measures for Terri.

As Terri's husband, Michael has been her guardian and her surrogate decision-maker. By 1998, though -- eight years after the trauma that produced Terri's situation -- Michael and Terri's parents disagreed over the proper course for her.

Rather than make the decision himself, Michael followed a procedure permitted by Florida courts by which a surrogate such as Michael can petition a court, asking the court to act as the ward's surrogate and determine what the ward would decide to do. Michael did this, and based on statements Terri made to him and others, he took the position that Terri would not wish to continue life-prolonging measures. The Schindlers took the position that Terri would continue life-prolonging measures. Under this procedure, the trial court becomes the surrogate decision-maker, and that is what happened in this case.

The trial court in this case held a trial on the dispute. Both sides were given opportunities to present their views and the evidence supporting those views. Afterwords, the trial court determined that, even applying the "clear and convincing evidence" standard -- the highest burden of proof used in civil cases -- the evidence showed that Terri would not wish to continue life-prolonging measures.

Recently, Michael received an offer of $1 million, and perhaps a second offer of $10 million, to walk away from this case and permit Terri's parents to care for her. These offers, assuming there were two, were based on a misunderstanding of the situation here. Michael lacks the power to undo the court order determining Terri's wishes and requiring the removal of her feeding tube. He did not make the decision and cannot unmake it. The court made the decision on Terri's behalf. Nonetheless, Michael apparently rejected each offer.

Jim - the court used evidence to make its determination and very influential testimony included Michael's assertion that Terri would want to die. It is further an established fact that Michael first began attempting to end his wife's life by withholding medical treatment in 1993, long before the court ruled in favor of starving Terri to death. It is also a fact that one of Michael's early affairs was with a woman who testifies that Michael had no clue what Terri would have wanted.
