Today it's Terri, but... Our thanks to Tom McMahon, for writing about his son: In February 1991 our son Ryan suffered a severe brain injury. He was in the hospital for 6 months, and has never regained the ability to walk or talk. He cannot answer Yes or No by any means. He is totally dependent on our care. When he came home from the hospital, he had a feeding tube to his stomach just like Terri Schiavo does now.See a related post on the experience of others. If the current battle were only about Terri Schiavo it would be worth waging. It's not. There are thousands of others who are watching in horror as the courts bestow the legal right to murder on Michael Schiavo. There were many victims who were not well known that preceded Terri. Caryn, How would you feel if you in-laws thought your husbands wishes were to be unplugged and they took you to court to take the decision out of your hands and put it in their's? Since I've been caring for my husband for over 15 yrs and have dealt with hundreds of people with brain-damaged, let me clear up some misconceptions some people (like Terri's husband & Felos) have.
I'm sure most people who look upon Terri and others who have had brain-damaged will remark that they would not want to live like that. Well who the hell would at first glance, but let me tell you the spirit to live I've seen in my husband and others to best understand. When someone has brain-damage, they are a changed person. They no longer think the same way because their brain is not working the same way. The brain also controls all your motor functions. Gone maybe are the days of worrying about what's for dinner or paying bills,or what they may have said in a casual conversation but it has been my experience that they know and are aware they exist and are doing the best they can depending upon the limitations of their brain function. Terri sleeps, holds her head up, moves her head, and asks for mommy ( never read any where that she asked for her husband, and that should tell you something)! Rehab is vital to help improve the brain to get it's signals to to the right areas. Also the brain tries to heal it's self as recorded recently with the woman who started talking after 20 yrs. The brain is truely the final frontier and any doctor who says he knows all about the brain should lose his license. A PVS state is a prognosses not a diagnosses. Terri's husband has denied her rehab and thus has hindered Terri's recouperation (she does not have a terminal illness) from being the best she could be.
Michael should divorce Terri and let her be with her parents who truely love her unconditionaly and who accept her as she is, as the beautiful lady that she IS!
